I have a belief that children’s rooms should be FUN! While they need to be functional, I love to create rooms that foster learning and growth too. I am currently working on redesigning my son’s room for his second birthday. I love his room so much and I will be sad to see it go, and at the same time I am so excited about the plans I have for the room.
I guess it’s like parenting. As your child grows a part of you may mourn the baby stage, the late night feeds when everything is still in the house and it’s just you and your child awake, those first steps, first tastes of food but then the joy of all the new milestones you have to look forward too. It’s bittersweet!
I want Xavier’s room to be a fun place to hang out. We don’t have a separate play room in our home (as many families don’t) and we have some great moments singing, reading, dancing and playing silly games like making a washing basket into a boat, and chasing each other around in the room. So his new space will be full of colour, I have ordered custom made teepee from Banana J Creations so we can read and play in the room too. I have chosen to spend a limited amount on the room – there is a possibility we may be temporarily relocating next year – so it seems a waste to be too extravagant with anything that we can’t take with us.
I LOVE a challenge and I love to save money where I can so I will share ALL of my sources and any DIY projects with you when the room is finished. In the meantime I put together a few of my favourite ideas to add a little fun into your child’s haven!
If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook you may have seen that I flew down to Melbourne last week for a couple of days to attend the Kids Instyle and Life Instyle Trade Shows. Lucky for me you aren’t able to actually purchase there and then (unless you were placing an order) because then I would be totally broke! I am known as a cushion fiend and with all the amazing designs I saw while I was there (not to mention all the other lust-worthy homewares) if I was let loose over those two days my bank balance would have gotten very low!
I spent day one at the Kids Instyle area – meeting some of my suppliers from my online store, and photographing and making notes of all the new seasons bedding, toys, rugs, cushions, furniture and accessories that I added to my wish lists for all my future clients. As many of my clients opt for my online eDesign service, it was great to be able to see and feel everything in the flesh also!
At the end of day one I was exhausted I must have done at least 10 laps of each section to make sure that I hadn’t missed anything. Before I headed back to my hotel (my bag heavy full of brochures, catalogues and business cards) I did a quick detour past Zara, you know, just in case they had anything in my size….

I’m so happy that I decided to stay for a second day and tackle Life Instyle. One of the things I love about my job is to be able to expose my clients to new designers and stores. Many parents when designing a space for their child can fall into the trap of only shopping in stores especially for children. Now, we are fortunate to have an unbelievable amount of kid-specific retail stores that stock innovative, on-trend designs and I love to be able to mix these in with pieces from stores that other people may not know about! All in all it was a fabulous trip and my mind was buzzing with ideas and inspiration – I can’t wait to head down again next year!
This month I also wrote an article for Coast Kids GC magazine…
and shared some of my Nursery Essentials on one of my favourite blogs Belle Maison
